California Coast Engagement Photos
Big Sur, Carmel, Santa Cruz & Half Moon Bay
There’s something about the California coastline that feels larger than life.
Maybe it’s the cliffs dropping into the Pacific.
Maybe it’s the fog rolling in like a movie scene.
Or maybe it’s the feeling that you’ve stepped into one of those places you’ve only ever seen in magazines.
For couples who love travel, adventure, and dramatic landscapes, the California coast offers some of the most unforgettable locations in the world for engagement photos.
Over the years I’ve photographed couples all along this stretch of coastline — from the rugged cliffs of Big Sur to the pebble beaches of Carmel and the natural arches of Santa Cruz.
Each location offers its own personality, but they all share one thing in common:
They feel like an experience.
And that’s exactly what engagement photos should be.

Carmel: Romantic Pebble Beaches and Golden Sunsets

Stephanie and Richard chose Carmel for their engagement photos because they wanted something that showcased their love of hiking and exploring. Carmel’s coastline is unique. Instead of soft sand, many areas are covered in smooth pebbles and sculpted rock formations. Waves crash dramatically against the shoreline, creating an incredible backdrop for photos.
Stephanie wore a burnt orange dress that moved beautifully in the ocean wind while waves splashed against the rocks behind her at sunset.
Carmel is perfect for couples who want something that feels romantic, dramatic, and unmistakably Northern California.

Big Sur: The Ultimate California Coast Adventure

If there’s one place that defines the California coast, it’s Big Sur.
Driving Highway 1 through Big Sur feels like entering another world. Towering cliffs, endless ocean views, and winding roads make it one of the most iconic landscapes in the United States.
For Benedict and Jacque’s engagement session, we turned the entire experience into an adventure along Highway 1.
We stopped at scenic overlooks near Bixby Bridge, photographed them driving the winding road together, and captured cinematic moments using the car's headlights as the sun disappeared behind the mountains.
One of my favorite photos from the evening is Jacque leaning out of the driver’s window laughing while Benedict looks at her from the passenger seat — the kind of moment that feels spontaneous and completely alive.
Big Sur engagement sessions are less about standing in one place and more about exploring together.

Pfeiffer Beach: Dramatic Rock Formations and Golden Light

Some locations feel almost surreal, and Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur is one of them.
Massive rock formations rise from the ocean, towering over the shoreline and creating dramatic shapes that glow when the sun begins to set.
Zahra and Cory love hiking and traveling the world, so they wanted engagement photos that felt adventurous and unforgettable. Originally we wanted a waterfall location but too many safety and legal hazards stood in our way which lead us to Pfeiiffer Beach and it's stunning geography.
As the sun dropped lower in the sky, light streamed through the openings in the rocks and illuminated the entire beach.
At the end of the session, they ran into the waves together, letting the water soak the sand beneath their feet while the last light reflected off the shoreline.
The result was one of those photographs that feels completely cinematic — wild, romantic, and full of energy.

Santa Cruz: Natural Bridges and Tide Pools

Santa Cruz offers a softer version of the California coastline.
Natural Bridges State Beach is famous for its rock arch that rises out of the ocean, creating a landmark that instantly feels recognizable.
For Nadia and Kevin’s engagement session, we climbed onto one of the lifeguard towers and captured the reflection of the sky glowing across the wet sand.
Later we explored the tide pools and watched the sun drop into the Pacific while waves rolled in behind them.
Santa Cruz is perfect for couples who want a classic California beach vibe with a little adventure built in

Half Moon Bay: Redwoods and Coastal Cliffs

Half Moon Bay offers something truly special — the ability to experience both towering redwood forests and rugged ocean cliffs within minutes of each other.
Maddie and Colin chose to exchange their vows surrounded by redwood trees before heading to the cliffs overlooking the Pacific for portraits.
Their story was especially meaningful. Both were serving in the Air Force and had spent the first year of their marriage stationed in different states.
They chose the redwoods for their ceremony because his last name was Woods — and they loved the symbolism of beginning their life together in a place that reflected their new name.

Another unforgettable moment happened during a proposal overlooking the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay. After she said yes, champagne was popped on the cliffs while waves crashed below.
Moments like these remind me that the California coast isn’t just beautiful.
It’s emotional.
It’s meaningful.
And it has a way of making every story feel even bigger.
